..Real Paper Stamp.. by Rabid-Weasels ..Real Paper Stamp.. by Rabid-Weasels
Okay, so I couldn't help making another stamp after the first one. Maybe I'll make more since they're easy and fun. *shrugs* At least it would mean I'm posting art more often.

Anyway, just a shout-out to those of you who actually have to use real paper when drawing, whether it lined or white or whatever. Not all of us have photosLop and a tablet. Okay, really I love photoshop and would use it if I had it, but oh well. What'ev.

I, too, use a tablet.  It's less about not using other things, and more about remembering your roots.  Even the top professionals often still start with a sketch on paper.

Me, too. I can't draw on a computer at all, and I think that tablets are not only impossible to use, but vastly overrated. I prefer using (mostly non-lined) paper. :)

I for one have always drawn with pencil and paper. However, now I just decided to invest for a tablet because everyone is making it such a big deal, especially for colouring and in my career choice, its all you ever use. I am proud though, to say I still use real paper. :)

I forgot to add: Not all tablets are high dollar Wacoms. You can get a brand new DigiTech tablet for $30 on amazon if you're a beginner or hobbyist, and although I've never used GIMP I've heard it's decently close to Photoshop.

Actually you aren't supposed to draw digitally until you've mastered drawing with pencil and paper. Most art schools require that you draw your digital pieces with paper and pencil and scan it in rather than draw it straight into the computer. It's also what I recommend for my students when I teach workshops on drawing and digital coloring.

Although I'm a professional digital illustrator now, I still use both. Sometimes I draw with blue pencil on xerox paper, sometimes I draw straight into the computer with my cintiq. It depends on what kind of mood I'm in and where I am. Sometimes I draw thumbnails in pencil and scan them in to the computer to correct/change things and then draw on top of the pencil drawing in Photoshop to create my rough and tight sketches. There's a lot of different combinations you can use.

It takes a lot of practice to get used to the visual disconnect when using a tablet. Even then it's not a good idea to DRAW with a tablet... they're more for coloring/painting until you've mastered drawing with pencil and paper.

I really like using paper, but I often start to feel alone when all my friends are getting these cool tablets, and the closest things to a tablet I have are the trackpad, my ipod, and that tablet or the wii that u have to push down hard or else it doesnt work >.<

You can get a brand new DigiTech tablet for $30 on amazon. It's not as fancy or sensitive as a Wacom, but it's more than adequate for beginners and hobbyists and will still give you far more fluidity and pressure sensitivity than a trackpad.

*highfive*

I can afford a tablet, already have a fancy mac and lots of video and photo editing software, and I still use paper as well.

I'm not saying that digital art isn't art, but it does seem to be less about skill and more about knowing the program -- and so I always appreciate people who are able to turn a piece of paper into something beautiful, because erase marks tell more of a story than a million CTRL+Z that you never see.

I can afford a tablet

Not all tablets are expensive Wacoms, especially for beginners and hobbyists. You can get a brand new DigiTech tablet on amazon for $30 that is more than adequate for most peoples' needs. I just picked up a used Wacom Graphire (which is now called a Bamboo) on eBay for $30 last week because I needed a small tablet to travel with.

I'm not saying that digital art isn't art, but it does seem to be less about skill and more about knowing the program -- and so I always appreciate people who are able to turn a piece of paper into something beautiful, because erase marks tell more of a story than a million CTRL+Z that you never see.

As a professional digital illustrator, no. One of my latest digital deviations has over 200 hours of work in it and it tells just as much of a story as a piece of paper with eraser marks all over it, thank you. :unimpressed:

Digital artists get very, very tired of constantly hearing similar sentiments from people who either say what we do is easier because there's a computer involved, our work isn't really "art", it doesn't take as much skill, we aren't "real" artists like those who use traditional media, etc. Take your pick, someone has said it to us in order to point out how superior traditional media is along with the artists who prefer it.

Digital is just a media choice like acrylics or colored pencils. Photoshop doesn't have filters for composition, anatomy, line work, color theory, value structure, lighting, or shading. There are features to tweak those things, but there is nothing in there that does it for you if you know how to poke the right buttons. I got so sick of hearing that sentiment that I made a stamp about it that details why that isn't fair right here: [link]

All highly skilled digital artists can draw just as well with paper and pencil, believe me. I have plenty of deviations that were made with nothing but a blue mechanical pencil as proof of that. You have to have traditional media firmly under your belt before you can move on to digital and be skilled at it, which is why most good art schools don't allow students to take digital illustration classes until their junior and senior years.

Be careful saying that. Any digital painter worth their money will tell you that it all takes the same skills, regardless of the tools.

And that would be absolutely correct. Digital artists get really damn tired of hearing that crap over and over and over again. I haven't spent the last 15 years developing my work in order to be told it's inferior simply because it's finished with Illustrator and Photoshop.

Why can't we all just be friends D: Instead we automatically assume "OH That person uses MS their art must REALLY suck" or "Oh that guy over there used PS he must think he's better than everybody" then there's "OH I use a mouse, I'm better!"

AND YES I HAVE SEEN PEOPLE DO THIS! I use more computer, cuz my scanner is a pain in the butt, but my sister uses traditional and she's amazing. At the same time you can't do things you can do on paper with computer and vice-verse To me it should stop being a battle, everybody is amazing as long as they try :3

I use real paper too, and have no choice since I can't afford a tablet. xD I tried my friend's tablet once and it was pretty cool, but there's still a ton I can learn using just paper and other traditional tools (probably always will be), so I'm fine with my cheapo pencils and pens now. :)

Nice stamp! :)
